BFA and allied races FAQ

Q: What are these allied races everyone is talking about?

A: The next expansion, Battle for Azeroth, introduces a bunch of new playable races. Four of them - Void Elves and Lightforged Draenei for Alliance, Nightborne and Highmountain Tauren for Horde - are available right now if you pre-order and meet the requirements. They look cool and start at level 20. BfA also comes with a level 110 boost, but if you level an allied race without boosting, you get special race-specific "heritage armor."

Q: Sounds like fun. What are the requirements?

A: For each race, you have to be exalted with a certain faction and complete a related quest achievement on an existing 110 character. Those factions and achievements have been in the game since 7.0 or 7.3.0. You also have to do a short recruitment quest chain in the capital of the allied race's faction. That was added this past Tuesday.

Q: How long will it take to unlock them?

A: Most of the quest chains can be done in a few hours. Let's say 2-8, depending on which one and how prepared you are. Getting exalted requires doing a lot of WQs.

Q: That sounds like a lot of work. I don't like it.

A: That's not a question.

Q: Is it fair?

A: They were datamined weeks ago. People who have been doing emissary quests all along met those requirements weeks before that. So, whether or not it's "fair" is kind of subjective, but the community had plenty of time to prepare.

Q: Will Blizzard ever change those requirements?

A: Maybe. We don't know. But probably not completely and in the near future.

Q: Do I have to do them all on the same character?

A: No.

Q: Can an Alliance character unlock the Horde allied races?

A: You can get the quest achievement and faction reputation on a level 110 character of either faction. You have to do the recruitment quest chain on a level 110 character of the same faction as the allied race.

Q: I just want to play with the hot new feature. Why do I have to work for it?

A: Because Blizzard wants them to be special. If you're just starting now and want to unlock them, you have plenty of time to do so before Battle For Azeroth actually comes out.

Q: What happens if I race change to an allied race?

A: You can't race change to them until you meet the requirements to unlock them. Once you do so, you can race change an existing character if you want. But you only earn the heritage armor by leveling naturally. Once you earn it, you can transmog it on any character of that race, even if they were level boosted or race changed.

Q: Can we use heirlooms on the allied races and still get the heritage armor?

Yes.

Q: Is it possible to use a lvl 110 boost you get from BfA on an allied race after unlocking them?

A: Yes, but you won't earn heritage armor that way.

Q: I'm trying to level boost or race change but it's having problems. What gives?

A: Be patient. This stuff was announced noon PST on Jan. 30. That's less than 48 hours ago at the time I'm posting this. Blizzard is busy.

Q: The level boost or race change went through, but I can't (start the Suramar quest line/enter an instance/get an artifact). What gives?

A: It could be a bug. There have been a lot of them. See above. But also, all boosts all along have had a restriction on entering certain types of instances and things like that right after boosting. If it's been less than 24 hours since you boosted, that could be why.

Q: Where can I find out more?

A: Wowhead is a good source.
